My name will never be engraved on a wall.
My face will never be immortalized on a statue in the mall.

My voice will never be heard by the masses on the evening news.
My story will never make the best sellers list or a movie that the academy would choose.
And I doubt my memory will linger like those who have already made the ultimate sacrifice.

So what is my legacy?
Parents that wonder did we raise him right.
A wife that takes comfort in another mans arms every night.

A son who blames his father for not doing as mommy said
And the only monuments my name will ever adorn are enlistment contracts, a divorce decree and a tombs stone once I am dead.

Was it worth it?
Did I sacrifice too much or was it enough?
Do I regret my choice?
You may ask me these questions and more when you dawn the uniform
And toe the line.
When you leave that sheltered life far behind.
